Most visitors leave Nusa Penida without seeing the island its people live on. This day is about that island: the temple that brings pilgrims from mainland Bali, the cloth woven in the uplands, and a lunch you cook with a family.

## The day

Pura Dalem Ped, on the north coast, is one of the most important temples in Balinese belief. Pilgrims cross from Bali to pray here, and your guide, who grew up on the island, explains the courtyards and the ceremonies while the morning offerings are made.

At the market you shop for lunch with the cook who will host you. Then up into the hills, where cepuk, the island's traditional cloth, is woven on hand looms. You can sit at a loom and try a few passes.

Lunch is cooked in a family compound: a spice paste ground by hand, sate lilit wrapped around lemongrass, vegetables with grated coconut, and rice. You eat together.

## Before you book

- Sarongs and sashes are provided. Please cover your shoulders.
- Temple custom asks women who are menstruating not to enter. Nobody will ask; we mention it so you can decide.
- Tell us if you keep halal, eat vegetarian or have allergies, and the menu is planned around it. The kitchen is a family home, not a certified one.
- Weaving is done in people's homes, and what is on the loom varies. We confirm the household a few days ahead.
