Almost every trip to Nusa Penida starts and ends in Bali. The airport is at Denpasar, the boats leave from Sanur, and the island has more to offer than the drive between the two. These are the parts we build our trips around.

## Ubud

Rice terraces, water temples and the Campuhan ridge walk, about an hour and a half from the airport. Tirta Empul, where Balinese come to bathe in the spring-fed pools, is a short drive north. The Jatiluwih terraces and the temple at Taman Ayun are part of the UNESCO-listed landscape of the subak, Bali's centuries-old system of shared irrigation.

## Sidemen

A valley in the east under Mount Agung, Bali's highest volcano, with terraced rice fields and songket weavers in the village. It is quieter than Ubud and suits a slower few days.

## Uluwatu and the Bukit

The Bukit peninsula is Bali's southern tip, with cliffs, surf beaches and some of the island's best villas, 30 to 45 minutes from the airport. Pura Luhur Uluwatu stands on its cliff at the south-western point, and the Kecak is performed beside it at sunset.
