The east coast has fewer visitors than the west and, for many guests, the better beaches. Diamond Beach and Atuh sit side by side under white cliffs, and the day ends inside Goa Giri Putri, a Hindu temple in a limestone cave.
Your speedboat lands on the east side of the island, close to the beaches. Diamond Beach comes first: the view from the cliff, then the stairs cut into the rock down to the sand if you want them.
Atuh is next door, with its rock arch standing in the bay. Then the Thousand Islands viewpoint and lunch.
On the way back to the harbour we stop at Goa Giri Putri. A flight of steps leads to a narrow opening; you squeeze through, and the cave opens into a high chamber lit by lamps, with shrines along its length. Sarongs and sashes are provided, and a priest may offer a blessing.
